Leo has been incredible at providing both academic support within subject areas and general support throughout my studies. She has spent a lot of time this year assisting me with academic issues, even those that did not relate to her subject area. Leo is extremely approachable and helpful at all times and has been a huge help throughout the year as someone to provide guidance when it is needed. Her dedication to the law school and its students really shines through.
Mike should be nominated as to begin with, he deserves to be nominated for more than one of the awards on offer, including 'Best Feedback' and 'Best Academic Support'. Mike has taught me on two modules throughout my Digital Marketing Postgraduate degree so far. He taught us our very first module and was highly welcoming and engaging from the very start. I knew from the second that he started teaching that the staff here were of an extremely high level. He is able to teach us the most challenging and complex material whilst having us in fits of laughter because he is so comical in his approach but it has made us all love learning with him. He has been inundated with requests for him to be their dissertation supervisor (including myself) because he is just simply fascinating to learn from. He is always keeping us updated with the best advise and resources for our learning, even though at the moment he isn't currently teaching us. He just makes sure that we know that we can always come to him with any questions at any time. I have been at The University of Southampton for almost four years now, and Mike is by far the best teacher, lecturer, mentor and advisor I have ever known. That is why I am certain that Dr Mike Molesworth should be nominated for The Most Engaging Lecturer.
I could have easily nominated Weisha for all of these awards. Weisha has relentlessly worked to improve the Marketing degree and our contact and relationship with all the marketing lectures . Weisha dedication is clear and her ability and willingness to make time and show genuine interest in her students is clear. Weisha has been approachable throughout, before class, during lecture breaks, her office hours, via email. Her approach has certainly been also a role in which to follow for all the other members of staff who have recently joined the Marketing team- all of which are incredible! Weisha deserves far more than this award for all of her dedication to Southampton Business School, the Marketing course and all the students within it.
Most Engaging Lecturer
James is one of the most enthusiastic lecturers I know and he always has a way of capturing the attention of students. He is willing to explore concepts beyond the curriculum and never fails to explain things simply, in a way that anyone would understand. Not only that, but one can tell that he deeply cares both about his lessons and his individual students. It is a pleasure to have him as our tutor and he never fails to make classes enjoyable no matter how difficult the material is.
Dr. Johnson is an incredibly stimulating and enthusiastic lecturer. I have never seen a room of 200 students listen so attentively to every word. Dr. Johnson integrates interesting and enjoyable activities to help students better understand concepts and always relates these concepts to real world examples and success stories. He makes the subject beyond enjoyable and genuinely tries his best to encourage participation and engagement with the subject. He has also prepared the highest standard of teaching materials in the form of a printed and bound book of all the resources we require for the course, with additional pointers to resources that help further reading and independent learning on the subject. His BlackBoard site is one of the best organised and all the materials from the course are available from the start of the module. Dr. Johnson is a fantastic lecturer - the best I have had during my 4 years at the Southampton Business School.
Kristina worked patiently with us from week 1 in Data Mining for Customer Insight. New to the Marketing team for 2016 Kristina really adapted to teaching our class, whom at the beginning genuinely had no idea. We'd all been away for a year, disliked SPSS and couldn't remember the difference between a discrete or continuous variable. Nonetheless, and without being patronising, Kristina made a huge effort to ensure there was understanding across the classroom. Her approach to data mining, away from simply just learning to recite and rather embarrassing deeper understand was key. Challenging during at the time, the class has reaped the rewards, our knowledge and understanding is only truly reflective now we have finished the module. Kristina's approach to teaching was fundamental. Kristina gave real world examples. She patiently explains concepts, she pushed up to really and truly understand. Personally, the recording on the lectures was fundamental in helping us achieve this understanding- having the chance to rewatch something, once, twice, three times to make sure, to pause and to think, to take extra notes, allowed us to engage with the content even away from The classroom. The recording of the lectures didn't even see student attendance drop. Which could be the case when recording occurs. Kristina made it clear from day 1 that she would work with us to make sure we achieved, and acheieved we all did!
Best Pastoral Support
Caroline has been my personal tutor this year and if it wasn't for her help through some very difficult issues I would have had to put my studying on hold. As a personal tutor not only was Caroline incredibly approachable and reliable but she was also incredibly helpful, she even attended appointments within the university with me when I was suffering with anxiety. Caroline would email regularly to check in which was something that was really appreciated, she would also put me in contact with areas of the university that could help me that I wasn't aware existed. Caroline has provided so much support this year and has gone out of her way to help me as her personal tutee
As a PG courserep, he is not only planning the Grad ball, but has also come up with new ideas like having a accounting and finance t-shirts as well as having socials!

Help raise concerns to our module leaders and moved deadlines of relevant coursework to give me enough time to complete it to the best of my abilities
Sorted out issues- i.e. helped resolve complaints, move deadlines, support us as our rep. She has kept us updated throughout any stages of issues and consistently asked for feedback o our modules. We all feel very comfortable sharing any issues we may have with the course with her and hope she can represent us again next year.
She was very helpful in delivering our feedback, complaints and requests.
The most remarkable thing she helped us in was delaying the deadline for an assignment from the 24th of March to the 19th of May because a large group of us thought that we had too much deadlines and midterms during the initial date and because we were very confused about the content of the assignment.
This representative has always listened to feedback given to her and has consistently investigated and communicated with relevant staff in an attempt to solve problems that present themselves in this feedback. She has been able to change the way some modules are taught and when some deadlines fall which has been to the benefit of the student body.
On a personal note, she is very easy to work with, has a great sense of humour and is utterly dedicated to her work and her position as Academic President.

Gave a lot of help on a hard assignment
David is probably one of the most supportive lecturers I've encountered (and I've been a student for a fair few years now!) In a masters level module where most of the students are from one discipline, there are a few of us from a different one so are struggling to keep up with some of the methods and terminology used. David is happy to answer questions after every lecture and via email in between. He has also arranged a regular slot for the few of us that need extra tutorials to help us - he's rearranged/cancelled other "less important" (his words!) commitments so that he can make the time to help us at a time that suits us. He does all of this as well as taking the time to make sure that we are enjoying and coping with the course without patronising us. We're still treated like Masters students and not once have I felt stupid for asking the (probably very basic) questions I have because of him. In fact David actively encourages questions relating to anything we don't understand about the course or related content. I have to say, if it wasn't for David's support I'd either be failing the module or very very unhappy with it, but instead I'm able to enjoy the content and ask the questions I need to be able to understand it.
Most Engaging Lecturer
Dr Mills never fails to deliver lectures with unrivalled clarity and enthusiasm. He is a joy to watch and listen to. His teaching of the electronics part of my course has been incredible and he deserves an award for the effort he has obviously put into his work.
Martin Browne is hands down the best lecturer I've ever had at university. I always looked forward to his lectures. He would consistently engage with all students and make sure that everyone knew what was happening.
Patrick James has immense passion for the Energy and Sustainability Masters course and is an amazing lecturer who really engages the subject in the classroom.

He's ensured lectures are recorded and has passed on views directly to lecturers whether we think they are fair or not.
Last year we were not given mark schemes for many papers until we asked our course rep to sort it out
I have had issues with the way our coursework has been marked and Jake has advised me on the actions that needed to be taken and has represented my views at meetings to ensure that this can be changed to help future years get fairer and more representative marking.
He has also made surveys fun and interesting and keeps us up to date on any changes which are made as a result which makes you feel that your opinion matters.

Kay was incredibly supportive when we were doing our "palliative and end of life care" module.
Many students struggled with this module and Kay was extremely supportive and professional when teaching this module. The amaount of support we had with the assessment at the end of the Module was outstanding as well. Thankyou Kay!!!!!
Marie is not only a very supportive cohort lead, always prepared to provided assistance when needed, but her blackboard resources for her present module NPMS3033 - Evidence base for Midwifery Practice is exceptional. Marie always strives to support her students in a way that encourages personal development opportunities and for this I believe she should be recognised.

Willing to have one to one's to clarify issues, replies to emails promptly, well organised, engaging in lectures, makes the lectures fun, is empathetic, always happy and encouraging yet honest, provided emotional support for a fellow student.
Rach took the time to help me fill out my special considerations form due to having exams on the anniversary of my mums death. She also made sure I had all the help and support I needed throughout this difficult time for me which made studying and completing my exams much easier.
Best Pastoral Support
This nomination could never even begin to describe how much Sue has done for me over the past two years of her being my personal tutor. She has selflessly helped and encouraged me through some of the darkest days I've known, and she has never pushed me to disclose anything to her that I did not feel comfortable with. Sue has gone over and above her professional duties, for example by emailing me late at night to check that I'm OK when she knew it was going to be a particularly tough day, and I have always known that I can drop her an email if I need to. I think it was very clear when I began this course that I wasn't OK and that I didn't trust people readily, but Sue signposted me to the appropriate services so that I could access help, and never made me feel as though I was a nuisance. Sue has always made me feel supported, and slowly but surely I began to trust her. The best thing is that I know that she is there if I ever need her, but that her role in pastoral support never spills over into our professional relationship in lectures and seminars, or on clinical placement. As a student midwife, my learning is not confined to the university, and Sue has been there to support me throughout clinical placement too. We have tripartite meetings with clinical mentors and personal tutors, and Sue makes sure that she asks the appropriate questions to ensure that I am getting the support that I require to enable me to be the best student that I can be. I think that my time at university would be markedly different had I had a less empathetic and less compassionate tutor than Sue. She has consistently dealt with a multitude of personal problems that I have divulged to her with warmth, compassion, honesty and professionalism.

Best Academic Support
Chris has spent the entire year going immensely far out of his way to help me with any and all questions and difficulties I have had with my assignments. Not only is his feedback detailed and helpful, but he knows where his boundaries are as a lecturer in not giving me any answers, but pointing me in the right direction with my research. His response time is impeccable, not last week he responded to an email I sent on a Saturday within the hour. And to top it all off he is perhaps the kindest and friendliest lecturer I have ever had, being completely non-patronising (unlike one lecturer I had this year) . It has been a privilege to have been his student for my final year.
Dr Prior is a fantastic lecturer who often goes unrecognised within the fantastic history department. His delivery of teaching is impeccable and he really knows how to ask the right questions to get students thinking, whilst extracting the most out of seminars. He is one of the only lecturers who knows how to scale a module accordingly (15 and 30 credits), so students do not feel overwhelmed with their workload, and he delivers all of his modules with enthusaism, rigour and passion- something which many lecturers lack after a few years of being at the University. He is very approachable and never makes an idea seem 'stupid' or irrelevant and his ability to be receptive to our ideas is fantastic, especially as you can tell he values your opinion and thought process. In terms of Academic support, he provides detailed feedback and is one of the only lecturers that makes time to discuss your essays after you have recieved feedback, something very important when you are trying to improve as much as possible. He widely advertises the writing workshops and hosts meetings before essay deadlines to discuss them with you, and he chases you up on this- so if you haven't seen him- he definately knows! It is for these reasons that his students are able to enjoy his modules while producing their best pieces of work, and I know he has personally pushed me to produce my best essays in history. I never thought I could get a first in a history essay and be proud of something that I've written, but his constant belief, constructive critisim, and appraisail has made it possible.
Always finds a way to be available to speak to whether you need to, he goes out of his way to offer support and to help find a solution to a situation whether it be personal or academic!
Giulia has been very supportive and a continual source of information and guidance this academic year. I had not considered studying abroad until during the summer months, but Giulia has been very supportive of my decision to pursue the opportunity, and has made every effort to find the right information to guide me through the process.
I think Giulia has gone beyond what I would expect of an academic tutor. It is my desire to study in Italy, though this was not possible at first as there are no options offered to students on my program. Giulia has written to individuals both in Southampton University as well as potential candidate universities to discover what opportunities I have available to me. I am very grateful for her efforts to accommodate my wish to study in Italy, as the process appears not to have been nearly as straightforward as for a student requesting a year abroad at a university with a more clearly established relationship with Southampton.
Outside of helping me apply to study abroad, Giulia has also helped me reselect suitable optional modules after two that I picked at the start of the academic year were unfortunately cancelled. I have thoroughly enjoyed both of these new modules, achieving a high 2.1 for the replacement module in semester one, and I am expecting good results for the two replacements I have selected for this semester.
It is fortunate that Giulia has also been the lecturer for two of the modules I have taken this academic year. In this capacity she has been incredibly helpful at explaining the fine details of the materials we have covered, as well as providing a good deal of valuable and informative feedback about my work. Of all my lecturers, I think Giulia has been the most available, and has encouraged students to drop into her office even outside of office hours for one-to-one academic support.
It is for these reasons I think Giulia deserves the Best Academic Support Award.
For going the extra mile for her seminar group, offering a warm, friendly teaching environment, getting to know each student personally, going out of her way to provide assistance on referencing and writing skills for those who are struggling, encouraging an open door policy round the clock for those that need it, going beyond her seminar group to head a writing workshop to assist those struggling with essays. I haven't met a friendlier tutor since I've been at uni, she made me feel like I'm home. Apart from nick karn, what a lad he is

Ian teaches a subject that I thought would be incredibly hard to understand but I have breezed through it thanks to his support. His Lectures are clear and in Seminars he leaves plenty of time to help with any misunderstandings or questions. I feel I can ask him any question without feeling embarassed and I always get a detailed answer. Ian is very approachable and an all round friendly person
Jonathan has been exceptional with academic support using his time to constantly interact with students. This is both in terms of helping them develop essay ideas, and their own critical line of thought, and interacting with them to find out what new modules, or changes, they would like to see. He has certainly been a very active Director of Programmes and the alterations made in the course since I've been here reflect his hard work and consistent and enaging interaction with students.
He also spends a great amount of time giving feedback to students. Unlike any other lecturer, he offers 1:1 tutorials for all students to get feedback in specifc "feedback hours" (over-and-above his "office hours), after both essays and exams. This allows the higher-achieveing students to see what they need to do again, and lower achieving students to see what to do next time. I, for example, struggled on the essay but went to Jonathan in his feedback hour and he spent 30 minutes going through strengths and weaknesses as a result and, responding to his feedback, I gained a first for the exam. Jonathan dedicates his time to supporting his students and this allows students to flourish more than with any other lecturer. For his outstanding commitment to interacting with students, and his use of additional "feedback hours", Jonathan certainly deserves the award for Academic Support.
Julie always goes above and beyond what is needed in a lecturer - I would nominate her for all of the categories if I could! Not only is she an interesting and engaging lecturer, she is also always willing to help a student anyway she can, despite the fact she is often really busy as she has various important roles within the department. She is very approachable, kind and caring and will go above and beyond to help a student with their degree - for example she's always willing to meet outside of her contact hours and is good at responding to e-mails. One of the best lecturers not only the humanities department has, but also that the University has.
I have interacted with Dr Gammon in several forums, primarily orientated around the Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) but also on a number of other specific topics including module ballot, group project as well as personal advice/guidance when the occasion has warranted.
Dr Gammon has a personality that is friendly, engaging and open. Never afraid to deliver hard truths, Dr Gammon always seeks to clearly and concisely articulate her position, actively listen to those around her and give appropriate consideration to their comments. It is perhaps the defining characteristic of the faculty, that it engages with its students in this way and I believe the success of this engagement is based largely upon personalities like Dr Gammon.
What I admire most about Dr Gammon is that during the meetings and discussion we have had, she has always come well prepared having fully considered the subject under discussion. Given her extremely busy timetable, it would be understandable that Dr Gammon attend these meetings with nothing more than the briefest understanding of the student concerns. However, it is evident that she has looked into the problem from a variety of angles and is always well informed about the nuances and details of each problem set before her. This enables tangible progress to be made in development of the student learning experience and the last year would not have been nearly as effective as it has been without Dr Gammon's input.
Away from formal support Dr Gammon has always been a reliable source of informal support. With an open ear and a ready smile, Dr Gammon has always taken 2 minutes out of her busy day to say hello and ask how I'm getting on. This is a recurrent theme amongst my peers, who all speak very highly of Dr Gammon. All in all Dr Gammon has provided an outstanding level of support to the students at the University of Southampton, much of which will be unknown and unseen by the majority of the student body, but all of which deserves recognition.
She's a brilliant lecturer, and has been an amazing support throughout third year. She gives up a lot of her time for students and is always available to talk. She not only helps with the academic side of university, but also is a great comfort and support. She makes third year a lot less stressful, and is always willing to advise and help out.
Lucy has been particularly helpful whenever we have needed support over the last year. Her replies to emails have always been quick and helpful, especially with regards to the University of Southampton Student Film Festival. The festival is run by student volunteers, but could not happen without the help of the film staff. Lucy has always made it particularly clear that the department strongly supports the event, and has offered to help judge the films on the 23rd of March. Film students are particularly grateful when lecturers show an interest in helping not only with academia, but with the extra-curricula activities that students take on alongside their degree. In doing so, students can feel they have been helped more with employability and filmmaking skills knowing that they have the film department's support at all times. While this is relevant to all film staff, Lucy (as head of department) has always ensured film students feel supported by the department in all areas. Furthermore, she has helped us to continue the work of Mission Employable, despite the module no longer being run by the university, to ensure that students feel they have support when it comes to employability.
Despite the fact that Mission Employable is no longer being run by the university, Sally has continued to ensure that film students benefit from the employability skills that the university promises its students. Regardless of the fact that the help from those originally running the module is no longer available, Sally has gone about providing the students with an alumni presentation so that current students can learn from previous students who have made their way into the film industry. Even though she did not sign up to be a representative of employability now that Mission Employable has gone, this has not stopped her from pursuing the role and making sure the students do not miss out.
Out of my 3 years at Southampton, I cannot think of anyone more exceptional with their commitment to supporting students academically. Tony consistently gives his time to students to guide them through academic difficulties from structuring essays; giving advice on suitable primary and secondary material, and even giving me a pep talk to have confidence in my ability as a historian. This has not gone unnoticed by someone who struggles immensely with expressing themselves academically and I could not have gone through the year without Tony's generous feedback, support and even his Tommy Cooper impression every now and then. Tony is extremely approachable in his friendly manner and it has been a great privilege getting to know him. I respect him hugely as a scholar, a supervisor and as the best academic support in the Southampton History department.
Best PG or UG demonstrator/teaching assistant
Lizzy was an excellent postgraduate tutor for my appearance and reality seminars last semester. She explained things clearly and precisely and was really approachable when it came to issues for my assessed presentation. She was really easy to speak to and made me comfortable during discussion. With anxiety, I can often feel scared to talk in class but Lizzy helped me feel confident enough to share my views - for me this certainly counts as an exceptional commitment to supporting students on a personal level.
Marta's feedback has helped me drastically improve my work in Spanish this year. She takes the time to really look at your work and put detailed comments on it so that you know exactly how to improve (and all the little smiley faces which get put on there are a real confidence boost, too). In terms of brilliant feedback techniques, Marta's not short on ways to help you improve! She goes out of her way to make time to see you and if you're not able to see her at a convenient time, she'll even arrange Skype feedback meetings so that you don't miss out on some feedback on your work, even during the Christmas holidays! Also, her friendliness and overall great attitude really makes you feel at ease when speaking to her as you always know she really wants you to do well, which I think is really important during the feedback process. I appreciate everything that you do for me and everyone else, and you work so hard! Gracias por todo, Marta!
Most Engaging Lecturer
Alex is an enthusiastic, passionate and devoted lecturer in Philosophy who I have the delight to have been taught by. Alex spends a lot of time on his handouts and material, to ensure students get the most out of lectures and prepares engaging and interesting lectures. He first enthuses philosophy with a whole array of different subjects areas (for example exploring science, sociology and psychology in relation to disability, for his happiness and wellbeing model), which means that (and slightly unique for philosophy!), he has put the effort in to approach the material from different ways so that students can engage with it from whichever angle they find most insightful. He also incorporates a range of teaching styles over and above the standard: he uses graphs, videos, music and animated discussion to ensure students engage with the material and do not get lots in a 45-minute ramble. To this end he also spent excessive time and effort developing new forms of assessment he thought would be more engaging to students, and allow to fully explore the course, for example weekly quizzes worth 20% of his appearance and reality module. Alex epitomises transforming teaching in the usual lecture style to something which students find interesting and attractive, and feel like they can contribute too. His lectures have, without doubt, been the best I've had at the university (part of the reason I've taken his modules every year throughout the three years!). Alex thoroughly deserves this award to recognise his innovative teaching.
Aude is such a lovely, inspiring, and engaging lecturer who always makes the class come alive! She is so passionate about everything that she teaches and has a real enthusiasm for her subject, and it really shows. She is able to make even the most difficult of concepts to grasp seem like a piece of cake, and her love for her subject really rubs off onto her students! I thoroughly enjoyed all of her classes and always looked forward to what new concept she would teach us next. What's more, Aude is always so approachable and will always make time to see you, even if her schedule is choc-a-bloc, she is always willing to help and go the extra mile to help you understand a topic, or even if it's for a quick chat, she'll be there. Aude, thank you for everything you do, and keep being brilliant.
An incredible lecturer. Our whole class adored her because she was so detailed and clear and it was obvious that she had a real passion for what she was talking about. Always managed to apply the situations we were learning about with current events and had a really great lecturing style.
Chris is almost certainly the best lecturer / teacher that has ever taught me, throughout both school and university. As someone who is more conservative and right-of-centre in my opinions, I was slightly apprehensive about attending a module that sung the praises of President Obama's counter-terrorism and foreign policy actions. Indeed, before I came to Chris' lecturers, I had (to an extent) regarded Obama as a typically naive and wishful-thinking President, whose policies were motivated more by an overly liberal and "nice" ideology, than one of cold, hard strategic reality. Yet while listening in great depth to Chris, my perspective on President Obama changed substantially. His clear and no-holds-barred approach to explaining Obama's policies was very refreshing and easy to understand. There was no use of the moral high-ground or moral grandstanding. Instead, Chris simply told it like it was, showing how some of Obama's policies were in fact very successful in dealing with some of the problems posed by terrorist organisations in the Middle East and in the USA. For me, this was the best part of Chris' lecture style and teaching. Chris used carefully considered reasoning and evidence to explain President Obama's policies - simply put: he told it like it is (or was). By doing this, he was able to present an excellent argument in favor of Obama's policies, skilfully avoiding the trap that many fall into, of making the "nice" or "moral" case - rather than arguing on the basis of fact and evidence. Chris' lectures were without a doubt, thorough, interesting and extremely well supported with evidence.
Dr Chris Fuller has set an unassailable standard in the delivery of education within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Southampton. His holistic approach to teaching and his tireless dedication to fostering excellence amongst his students, should be the standard to which all other lecturers aspire.
Dr Fuller employs a wide range of learning tools ensuring that he appeals to a variety of learning styles, ensuring students are able to dedicate their time to learning and understanding. Dr Fuller published several guidance lectures as well as the most comprehensive course handbook I have encountered to date. He established a closed forum for the students to exchange ideas and to provide support throughout the course; this information was replicated on Blackboard, ensuring that all could benefit. Dr Fuller also recorded his lectures. This proved to be an invaluable tool for exam revision and to enhance understanding throughout the course. Students were able to focus on what he said and the arguments he made rather than trying to desperately write everything down. The support tools were also pitched at the right level of detail and content to support understanding – a balance few others have managed to achieve.
Dr Fuller is particularly dedicated to providing maximum support to his students. He spends a great deal of time with each student and is dedicated to answering student questions in a comprehensive manner, with associated references where appropriate, by anonymising and posting them on an inclusive social media forum. He takes the time with each of his students to go through assignment questions in great detail, dissecting the questions, examining potential approaches and identifying areas of strength/weakness. He strikes the right balance between providing guidance and allowing the student to develop in their own way. His assignment feedback was timely, detailed and empowering. Irrespective of grade, Dr Fuller provided comprehensive feedback on what worked well, what required more work and what could be cut out for future assignments in order to ensure student development. Feedback was tailored to each individual, demonstrating a personal understanding of each of his students.
Overall, Dr Fuller has demonstrated a level of excellence that is unsurpassed within the University of Southampton. The foundations of his performance are dedication, tireless effort and an empathic understanding of his student’s needs. It is for these reasons that he is deserving of this award.

Corey Schultz headed a sensational module on Contemporary Chinese Cinema this year. He introduced me, and the entire class, to numerous masters of cinema and challenging works outside of the obvious or ordinary handful of films.
Delivering content with extreme passion and enthusiasm Corey inspired us to look deeper beyond the films, creating engaging assignments far from the standard of providing us with a list of questions to choose from. We were encouraged to unpick and find out concepts for ourselves beyond the lectures, pushing me and many of my classmates to create some of the most challenging and rewarding pieces of work we have ever touched at university.
Looking beyond the borders of Chinese cinema and history Corey introduced difficult concepts to us, furthering our abilities to analyse film as a whole even outside of the cultural context of the module.
Corey was hugely open in his presentations and delivery ensuring to check with us what we thought worked and didn't with the module as it was happening instead of waiting for the "midterm feedback forms" we took an active involvement in how he ran the classes which improved our experience and reassured him of his fabulous teaching style.
Furthering this he shared his opinions and experiences with the films we studied. Explaining why he chose them, if he liked them--or not, and why he personally found them challenging.
He also tied Chinese cinema culture to larger contexts of Chinese art culture, presenting us with different mediums--installation pieces and photographs--which relate and strengthen our understanding of the topics.
Overall Corey created the best module I have ever taken, and has been the most eye opening, friendly, encouraging and challenging teacher I have ever had. If I could take the module again I wouldn't need a second to think--I would hop straight on board!
Corey completely defied my university expectation of a lecturer. His love for the course and for teaching allows for everyone to form their own opinion and love for the films he taught. In combining different elements of study such as philosophy within his film studies I feel as if I have learnt far more than just contemporary Chinese cinema. His lectures give enough information and time to dwell on and to allow for discussion to occur outside the lecture room. His seminars are more like a stream of thought where everyone is relaxed to share their feeling with Corey also pushing us to unravel these feelings a certain film gives us. The course and his teaching has just generally been enlightening, the freedom he gives to students in the course (be it in presentations or in essays) allows for the student to uncover things for himself and thus be interested in the course not strictly because it is a university module but more so as it gives them a new perspective of cinema, the world and the self.
Obviously has a massive passion for teaching his subject and explores questions and suggestions in a very engaging way. Also has taken the time to learn our names and our opinions which is lovely.
Most engaging in lectures, his style of lectures give enough time to take down comprehensive notes from the powerpoint slides whilst also allowing for the ability to take on everything he says and write notes on these too, great paced lectures, always answers questions in detail and is a down to earth inspiring lecturer of Continental Philosophy
She is one of the most engaging lecturers to have taught me- despite English not being her first language it has astounded me how thoroughly she taught my class on the philosophy of language. Her handouts and slides are always clear, detailed, and engaging with interesting examples and references to outside reading. She is always eager to engage in a discussion if a student brings up an alternative point, and is equally as happy to go over points that a student might not yet understand, while keeping things moving onward for the rest of the class. As a philosophy student I was dreading a module on logic- mathematics is far from our expertise- but I was so thankful to see that I have Giulia yet again, and she has transformed this difficult module into an interesting and understandable practice.
Jane co-ordinates and teaches two modules that are both inspiring, engaging and challenging- offering new theory and ways of thinking that really develop students into mature and mindful academics. Her teaching style is remarkable, so much enthusiasm and energy that genuinely excites students. Those lucky enough to be taught by her in second year don't think twice at choosing her fourth year module- and honestly wish she could teach every module!
I nominated her in both second and third year (during my year abroad) because I really want her recognised and celebrated- her modules are rather small and I understand it is unlikely that she will win, going against larger module lecturers. However, just any form of acknowledgement would be fabulous and she would really appreciate it- probably cry!
John should be nominated for his award for not only his passion within the subject but also due to the way he encourages students to reach their full potential. I have been lucky enough to take the module Forging the Raj (HIST3176/3177) in my final year and university and John has made the experience not only enjoyable by his approach and knowledge to the subject but also in a way that understands the pressures of final year study. John provides excellent feedback on all work, whether this is assessed or contributions to seminars (I know this is expected of lecturers at the university but John goes above and beyond to make sure students efforts are recognised). John is flexible and gives advice in order to make sure that each student can fully explore their own interests with the topic - I am yet to email or approach John without him responding with enthusiasm. He is also one of the most passionate lecturers I have come across at university, where his lectures are always dynamic, interesting and informative - his use of popular culture references, videos, images and conference papers is impressive. Finally, John has provided the class with interesting aids when learning about his subject: he has organised a class trip to an exhibition he curated, read excerpts from papers he has given at conferences and shared with us more about the profession of 'historian' than is often given to students. John's module has been by no means 'easy' but his enthusiasm, passion and support has made my final year as a history student, accessible and enjoyable. ,
Fantastic lecturer and staff member; his lectures and seminars are absolutely amazing, in terms of academic content, but in how they are pitched and how inclusive and useful they are for us in the course (for example, always making sure everyone contributes, but without putting them on the spot or making it awkward at all), and in how suitable they are. The module was on a potentially divisive topic (the British Raj and the East India Company), but the way he helped us engage with the source material and draw conclusions was incredibly professional. Debates were encouraged, and we learnt a lot about defending our positions academically, but whilst the environment was stimulating and challenging, it was never 'too much' or seemed fake or 'put on' for the sake of it - rather he was actually really interested in listening to our opinions and thoughts, and taught us respect for other viewpoints, even if we dismiss them for ourselves later on grounds of evidence.
We had a class trip to the maritime museum, which is a place he knew well and had previously worked in. I'll honestly never look at a museum exhibit in the same way again; he showed us the level of complexity which is required for even a single display cabinet item, and raised awareness of issues surrounding item placement and label wording - again returning to the topic of the module, should the label say 'The Indian Mutiny' or 'The Great Uprising'?
Overall, his enthusiasm for the module and topic was aboundingly clear. I began the module fairly skeptical about what exactly we'd be learning (I had absolutely no intention of learning a series of dates and laws, and little initial interest in 17th and 18th century politics which weren't scandalous or especially world-changing), but within the first week my mind was firmly changed to being set on continuing with the module. He brought the individuals alive; he explained the laws and dates in ways which made them relevant and useful and interesting; he basically has inspired me to pursue a Masters in history with the aim of completing a PhD in world maritime and martial history.
He's a cracking lecturer - I wish all of my tutors or lecturers over the last 4 years had been so good!
His ability to show and convey each topic in its own unique way while making it understandable is a key reason this module has been my most enjoyable at university.
Each topic and theme however abstract is clelary defined and explanined at the beginning and summarised to help situate its usefulness. The employment of mini- presentations is a key method and reason it has been so easy to engage with this topic.
Moreover, one of the most engaging aspects used by John is his own work in progress but that of his fellow academics. He uses his knowledge and is willing to share what is currently happening/directions the field of the East India company and the Company's raj is moving towards even if in the very early stages. This has not only helped allude to personal areas of interest, but situate where the material is leading and further help us engage with perhaps one of the most complex periods of history. This is wholly enjoyable which makes the work easier, it enhances the feeling and engagement of dealing with the most current research for our own.
I’ve only been taught by John for a year now, having been a fairly late arrival to his period of study. However, through his engaging and entertaining lecturing he has managed to make my 3rd (and final) year of study my most enjoyable one. His fun, innovative and admittedly slightly quirky style of lecturing makes the taught content all that more interesting, and his willingness to support and encourage student participation in his lecturing makes this all the more valuable to his students.
This is all the more impressive when considered alongside the fact that John is convening one of the 1st year core modules – something which one can only assume takes up a considerable amount of his time and energy. I for one am grateful for his hard work and enthusiasm, and I’m pretty confident that I am not alone in this.
John McAleer is extremely enthusiastic about all aspects of our course and consistently finds creative ways to introduce new and challenging topics. Among these are his use of historical themes, people or events attached to Cluedo cards to facilitate class discussions. During these discussions he is always encouraging and makes us feel like our contributions matter. He has improved our skills in historical research by giving us challenging texts to read and discuss in class and always provides a rapid and thoughtful response to any questions we email him.
John is simply the best lecturer that I have had the privilege of being taught by in the entirety of my Undergrad Degree at Southampton. Out of the 15 or more different staff members that I have had as lecturers throughout my time in the History department, John stands out singularly as the most engaging and inspiring lecturer of them all.
His tireless commitment to his students' learning, and getting the very best out of our seminars is reflected in the enthusiasm and eagerness that my peers bring to our classes on a regular basis. I know I can confidently speak for my entire third year class when I say that we all immensely look forward to our seminars with John. His passion for the subject is second to none and creates a wonderful class environment where everyone feels welcomed to express their ideas and develop new points of view on abstract and often difficult topics. Furthermore, it was the presence of John on the departments MA course that prompted me to apply for my Masters at Southampton and continue my studies under such an inspirational and stimulating lecturer.
I feel like John is an often overlooked lecturer within the History department, and that is probably how he prefers it, being the quiet and unassuming man that he is. However his contributions not only to the department, but also to the development of every individual student that he teaches, ought to be recognised. He is a truly spectacular lecturer, an expert in his field, and most importantly he's a good laugh. All of these traits taken together make John a stellar lecturer who's clearly immensely passionate about teaching and who commands the complete respect of all of his students.
For these reasons I believe that John is one of the most engaging lecturers at Southampton, and as such should be recognised for his continued outstanding contributions to both the advancement of the department department, and of his own students.
He is an amazing lecturer! You look around the class in his lectures, and everyone is completely hooked on his every word. Most people would tell you his are the lectures and modules that are the best. Nobody could bring a lecture to life so much as Mac does, but also keep it factual and informative. He's amazing, and really deserves this award!!
Jonathan should be nominated because of the outstanding teaching he offered students last semester and the care and dedication that he puts into making every lecture as engaging as possible for all students equally. He is always tailoring his teaching to fit the needs of the students which made for a very interesting and inclusive module (Action, Reason and Ethics). When anyone had problems he was always quick to solve them, like when I had a clash of two assignments due so he moved the date of his module's one, facilitating my learning experience. He was always really helpful if I wanted to clarify anything during his office hours and also very receptive and willing to explain things in different ways so people could understand. The lectures were also very fun and interesting and I feel that a lot is due to his ability and skill so he definitely deserves to get this award.
Michael has clearly put a lot of time and effort into his module Framing The Past. The handbook is incredibly detailed, as is the Blackboard site, and he is always very quick to help with questions, work and technical issues. Michael has ensured that our classes are easily accessible by recording them, and his lectures are always well thought out and detailed. The use of blogs in this module has made assessments more interesting, and the deadlines appear to be well-timed for third years who are doing dissertations. Finally, Michael is incredibly passionate about his module, and consequently makes his class enjoy each topic too.
Her lectures are always so engaging and her enthusiasm as well as her teaching style allow you to engage with the content of the lectures so that you understand the concepts being taught.

Best Pastoral Support
David has been my PAT throughout my three years at Southampton, and has been incredibly supportive during that time. Over second and third year, I struggled with anxiety and depression, and David constantly ensured that I was doing okay, and helped me with any issues I had. He was extremely approachable and made me, at a time I felt I could have left university, make me want to stay. When I needed special considerations, he went over-and-above what was required, and ensured all my needs were met by chasing up the office and paperwork himself, which was a great help and relief to me. He also emailed me regularly to check I was doing okay, and always asked me to drop in and have a chat whenever I wanted too. When I was struggling with time-management, David also made time in his busy calendar to sit down with me and help me balance my workload and plan my work. David is, without doubt, an invaluable source of support and I feel very lucky, and privileged, to have had him as my personal tutor during my time at Southampton. He is an asset not only to the Philosophy department, but the entire university.
Eleanor is not only a brilliant and engaging lecturer but also a wonderful person who genuinely cares about her students. She always responds incredibly quickly to e-mails and really takes the time to both reassure you and make sure you are okay in one-to-one discussions either on academic or personal matters. She is very approachable and even though I do not have her for Semester 2, I would always go to her if I had a personal problem or needed advice. She has helped me with my teaching application alongside various melt-downs regarding the sheer level of work for third students - she is an invaluable member of the Humanities department and is a credit to the university.
Even though she was my seminar tutor for just one session a week she made an effort to get to know us individually. Helen even helped out with a problem that my flatmate was having which she really didn't have to do. She was an excellent tutor academically but her friendliness and approachability is what sets her aside from anyone else I have come across at the University.
Julia is instrumental to the welfare of humanities students throughout the faculty. Her door is always open to students, and she provides such warmth alongside her practical advice that puts you at ease when you speak to her about pastoral issues. She always listens intently to what you have to say, and genuinely cares about the welfare of all students. She has gone above and beyond this year to support enabling students and she deserves to be recognised for her efforts.
Niamh is one of my lecturers, but she has gone above and beyond in supporting me through a difficult time.
I am a final year student, but due to medical reasons this is my third attempt at final year.
Niamh has always provided me with a 'listening' ear and supported and encouraged me. She has always accommodated me for appointments to help with my work. She is not my Personal Academic Tutor, yet she emails me to see how I am and is a huge support to me in completing my studies. I feel her commitment to students' wellbeing needs to be recognised.
Ray has been my academic advisor during my whole degree at university and I owe a lot of my amazing academic experience to his care and support and his warmth. He is such a dedicated and skilled intellectual but he is also someone who engages with you on a personal level and cares about your wellbeing not only as a student but you as an individual. He takes time out of his day to talk about how you are and how you are really doing and he cares about your future. I really think he deserves this award because of the outstanding work he has done as an academic advisor, guiding me through any troubles and difficulties I had during uni and always encouraging me and believing in me.
Throughout my time at Southampton Stephanie has been a fantastic pastoral and academic support, helping with both personal and academic issues with sensitivity and care. Whatever the problem she has helped in any way she can, liaising with the faculty through the difficulty of deferment at the start of the year, and supporting me through chronic health problems and family ill health. Her commitment to her students is a credit to the faculty.
My Rep has been so supportive this year. She is constantly one of the main faces of history and is one of the friendliest people to have ever existed! She is very approachable, provides incredible feedback at the SSLCs, and stands up for important issues such as provisions for enabling students. She is probably the most well known Rep throughout the whole of humanities, and this shows in her representation of student opinion. She is a diligent member of my team, and her confidence has grown so much over this year in undertaking this role. For the first time, she took over one of my student talks at the beginning of the year, and spoke to her cohort (a nervous task for even the best public speakers), and she delivered it with impeccable style. As well as being a great asset to my team, she is also excellent in Education Zone. Although, she doesn't always fully understand the complexities of Joint Honours issues, she is always willing to represent them (something which many single honours Course Reps forget to do) and respects mine and other opinions on the matter. She always provides significant contributions to education zone and to my SSLCs, and she cares deeply about her role. I know if she keeps continuing the way she does, she will continue to be a fantastic Rep and fantastic role model for the university,
I am writing on behalf of the Philosophy department to nominate Bruno Russell for an academic rep award. Bruno served as a rep during his 1st year and as academic president during his 2nd and 3rd years. During all of this time, he has been a source of extremely useful ideas and input into the development of Philosophy’s programmes. He has consistently provided valuable feedback on, e.g. proposals for new modules, new forms of assessment, and other initiatives. And he has worked with great energy and efficiency to help support other students.
Some examples of his work which particularly stand out are:
- Bruno launched and edited the Southampton Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy, which gives students an opportunity to publish their work. This has been a great success and I believe led to a similar initiative in History, which Bruno is also involved with.
- Bruno provided extremely useful input and encouragement into the development of new cover sheets for providing exam feedback. As a result of this work, students now receive written feedback on all their Philosophy exams.
- Bruno also encouraged us to create, and helped us to develop, a handbook providing details on optional modules, to make it easier for students to choose their modules.
Overall then, Bruno has been a model rep and academic president. He will be much missed! We strongly recommend him for an award.

Humanities Academic Presidents
The Humanities Academic Presidents have, quite simply, done a fantastic job over the past year. The work of an Academic Rep is rarely straightforward, but even in the face of adversity and difficulty the team have done a brilliant job standing up for the rights and views of all Humanities students. Particular successes this year include the launch of several rep-led projects across a number of disciplines, revisions and adjustments to the module balloting process and practical day-to-day improvements to the experience of students studying at Avenue Campus.
Academic Reps never expect anything in return for what they do, but in this case I think it is worthwhile to shine a light on the fantastic work of the Humanities AP team over the past academic year. They deserve each and every bit of praise they receive.
Gave me the support in helping me represent my subject, Ancient History in meetings. An inspirational figure who has been through so much and battled through situations with amazing stoicisim.
Maddy Ell has performed to the highest standard throughout the semester. She has pioneered the Academic Journal, she has worked tirelessly to further the student experience at the University of Southampton and she has engaged in a number of problem areas to ameliorate errors in process and assessment. She has done all of this against a backdrop of personal strife outside of university. Maddy has consistently demonstrated the fortitude and strength of character of a first class leader. She has engaged effectively with all levels within the university and delivered real change. She is someone who can be relied upon for sound advice and solid guidance. In short, she is a keeper, a valued member of the community and an asset to the university. More than any other rep, she has added value to the organisation and it has been a privilege to work with her.
Having personally known Maddy this year, I know she has put a lot of effort into being the academic president of history. She's changed the course rep structure to ensure that joint honours students are fairly represented. She's also helped to improve relations between the history and politics departments and has had a positive impact for many students. And Maddy took on many politics issues - which were outside her remit. Maddy has also created the first history undergraduate journal.
My rep has worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that student voices are heard at the SSLC. He always provides practical advice, and is determined to solve the module ballot situation since the crash last year. He is a mature student and always has everyone's best interests at heart. He is one of the most approachable people you can meet and he makes sure to always follow up with practical advice. He also provides great support to the AP too. Additionally, he always gives the best hugs and just is generally fantastic and upbeat.
Sam has been a great leader for all the Academic Presidents. In his role as Faculty Officer, he has always been there to help (literally, he replies to messages in seconds and has everything sorted before you know it) and has kept everyone in order. Even when situations have got tough, I do not know anyone who has acted so calmly in order to resolve issues. And I know that he will go on to do a tremendous job in the role of VP Education next academic year.
He has been absolutely amazing- the backbone to Humanities and representing students in the most caring and thoughtful manner.
He really is the go-to guy to get advice on absolutely anything- he has an incredible knowledge of the Faculty and University at large and a reliable expertise on technology.
Nothing is an issue- he makes everyone feel so comfortable, supported and important.
Sam has been a fantastic Faculty Officer this year. I know that sometimes Sabbs-in-waiting do not get awards because of their next title, however, I do hope that this message gets passed onto him so he can see all of the lovely things myself and other people think about him. Sam has been a rock to me this year. I knew third year was never going to be easy, but my unexpected circumstances including a large number of my family being diagnosed with cancer was hard to take, and Sam has been there every step of the way to make sure I am supported. A lot of things have changed since Sam was History AP, notably things like the Journal, Joint Honours issues, Group project issues, and enabling issues came my way in the department this year and there have been times when I have wanted to give up, but I haven't because Sam has an unfounded belief in all of his reps, including me. Even with the enabling issues and being told by my own course reps that nothing would come of it and I was aiming 'too high', Sam made me stick to what I believe in and essentially what is right, and we are now seeing a massive change in the way my department approaches enabling issues, and within the University as a whole. This would have never have happened if I had listened to my reps and had just given up. I ran to improve enabling and joint honours issues and Sam has been instrumental in helping me to succeed these. We are now in a position where all of my History Joint Honours Course Reps can attend Politics SSLCs, meaning that there will be greater collaboration between the two departments in the future. Sam's backing within all of this has massively helped me in gaining the consensus from my reps and the department that this is what needed to happen. Often, Joint Honours and Enabling issues are pushed to the back of a Course Rep's priority, as they do not quite understand them, but Sam has been a major player in bringing them to the forefront and I am confident that they will remain a top priority for many years to come because of his support. Sam is a wonderful person and it's not easy in helping an Academic President to deal with these huge issues, and I couldn't have done any of it without his firm belief that we could change things. I also want to point out that it isn't easy being a FO to a majority of girl AP's and Bruno, so Sam should at least know that we all think that he is absoloutely and utterly fantastic.
Best Academic Support
Mr Guirgis is the lead consultant for the Obs and Gynae Module in Portsmouth Hospital. He is a busy surgeon but still takes about 6 hours out of his week every week to teach students. This is unheard of - hardly any consultants have that much time or inclination to teach medical students. The teaching he delivered was so well structured and well thought out. He also truly has a passion for his patients, his subject and teaching which made his tutorials so valuable! This is truly some of the best teaching I have received in Medical School - Thank you very much!

Amgad is very engaging with medical students and has developed a close relationship with many of us. He is extremely helpful in the anatomy labs and really ges the extra mile to ensure that students maximise their learning.

Claire goes above and beyond her role to support and encourage all BM4 students. Not only is she an excellent part of the teaching team, but she is available to support us in any issues regarding our well-being and general welfare!
Anna has been a great help to the Faculty of Medicine course rep team. She has always offered a helping hand to the Faculty Officer, whether it be attending meetings, event planning and publishing the SSLC blog with the aid of some of the course reps. Her enthusiasm for improving student experience has impacted on the year 3 medical students - they have all benefitted from her regular communication with regards to gathering feedback and sharing relevant documents. Year 3 students are much more aware of how the Faculty of Medicine deals with students' concerns and the pathways for submitting their feedback as a result of Anna's excellent communication.
This year has seen the MMedSci intercalation process completely shaken up as a result of the new medical curriculum. Charlie has been there to support us and has gone above and beyond when dealing with staff. Not only have we been subject to a new curriculum, but Student Finance decided to pull our undergraduate funding. Charlie has done her upmost to find new financial methods of supporting us through this tough Masters year. Given that there are less than 23 people in our cohort, I doubt she will receive many nominations but believe she is truly deserved of recognition.
Just been a friendly help on the MedSoc committee, bringing great ideas, enthusiasm and smiles.
December has overcome huge personal issues through medical school including mental health. She sort adequate help and continued her study but then used her experiences to become an advocate for students who here in her situation or similar. She is a huge part of the MedSoc Committee and represents all students in BM6 and BM5 YEAR 2 with great passion. She frequently attends meetings to speak for minority groups and is not afraid to speak up about her personal experiences and puts it to good use. December is incredibly approachable and listens carefully to her cohort.
In addition to my previous submission. December is a student on the BM6 programme. This is the Widening Access course at Southampton Medical School. She is a great ambassador of the course and the cause. If you speak to any Widening Access students you will know how difficult it is to integrate into a Russel Group University and yet December has managed this. She is a role model to us all.

BM5 Year 2 have faced some set backs this year regarding various assessments. The year 2 reps have been working extremely hard to sort this out directly with the relevant module leads, which was greatly appreciated by the students. Their enthusiasm for improving the course and dealing with the sensitive issue of assessment results has been well received by both staff and students.
Deepika is a first year BM5 student who fully through herself into medical school. She won the election to become a the first year rep and has indulged in all things MedSoc. She has attended every single MedSoc Committee meeting (every Mondays) from when she started university. She frequently contributes to projects within MedSoc and communicates exceptionally well with her cohort. I hope she will carry on her excellent work and take more senior roles in representing medical students.
The first year medical students are incredibly involved with both academic representation and MedSoc. Deepika's enthusiasm for doing lecture shout outs, publicising events, gathering feedback and taking minutes at meetings has contributed to the high level of engagement of year 1 students. She has been a pleasure to have on the team.
Hoda Amar (Faculty Officer) has done a fantastic job representing the academic needs of the medical school. She has consistently gone above and beyond and achieved some amazing things.
Jacob is our 4th year rep for medicine. He is an incredibly passionate and virtuous young man. He has worked so hard this year, both with the students and with the staff, to really make our voices heard. He has been proactive in asking students about their views on the modules, and has then taken liberty to bring these up with the faculty to initiate change. He has been successful in improving many areas of the course, and has helped improve both the academia and the well-being of students. He also thought-up, and now co-ordinates, a sub-group within our year (within each placement) so that the opinions voiced were equally shared, and he has always kept us in the loop.
Jacob is a naturally kind and honest person, and everything he has done for us has been in a polite and thoughtful manner- he is well liked and respected by both students and staff; it is hard not to want to be friends with Jacob!
Not only has Jacob made us feel listened to by the faculty and done a wonderful job academically, he has also striven to improve our social well-being and supported our president in the running of MedSoc this year. He has contributed ideas and given talents for social events, which have been used, and is always offering his time for charity gigs and just when someone needs a helping hand. His enthusiasm is contagious; it is obvious he cares about MedSoc and about their morals by the way in which he supports the team and keeps us up-to-date with upcoming events and opportunities.
Jacob is the perfect year rep, and truly deserves this award. Jacob is not our year rep because he has to, he is our year group because he cares.

Gone above and beyond her role as course rep. Promotes all Medsoc events whilst trying to integrate the BM4 course with the rest of the medicine courses (who are often left out or secluded). In addition she is on hand to hear our complaints and feed back to the faculty, as well as helping out with the committee (something that she does not have to do) . A well deserved nominee.
Lowri Lane - BM4 Year 2 Rep.
Lowri has been the most active BM4 (postgraduate medicine) course rep we have ever had in the Faculty of Medicine. She has advocated for the 40 BM4 students who are traditionally seen as the minority group in Medicine. This is because they are based in Winchester (Royal Hampshire County Hospital) for most of their first year and then Basingstoke for majority of their second year. Lowri has made tremendous effort to integrate not only her cohort but her entire course, changing the way the wider medical school view post graduate medical students. She has been involved in the organisation of many of our social events such as the Christmas Ball and the MedSoc Families BBQ, a welfare initiative we run across all our courses. Lowri has worked closely with other course reps to help resolve issues we've had in our faculty providing a different perspective on things.
It is unlike graduate reps to participate with so much passion in the representation and integration of post graduate medical students so I believe she has changed the culture and will inspire the more junior medics to get involved more and advocate.

Best Pastoral Support
Dr.Hawkins has been teaching at Southampton University for several decades now and is still teaching with the same passion and commitment. He is one of the most commended and respected lecturers of Ocean and Earth. His endless interest in the smallest of marine creatures is infectious; thanks to him, generations of students shout “oh look at that little beastie!” at the sight of a polychaete worm (Dr.Hawkins most scientific taxonomic evaluation of invertebrates). His knowledge of all things invertebrate and parasitic knows no limit and combined with his excellent teaching, Dr Hawkins has helped students become interested and ultimately go into this line of research and work.
His dry sense of humour makes the first years tremble with fright, until they realise that what a fantastic man he is. By the time students reach final year, they all look forward to his labs (where classical music is invariable played; Dr.Hawkins love of Gilbert and Sullivan is now legendary) and he has supervised countless bachelors and masters projects. Every student knows that they can knock on his door and he will respond with kindness and patience, supporting them through any difficulty.
I consider myself very lucky to have been taught by Dr.Hawkins over the last 4 years and know that his retirement will mean future students will really miss something during their time at University of Southampton. The corridors of NOC will never be the same without Dr.Hawkins and his walking stick.
He's made it easy for me to talk about my problems and is always supportive and offers helpful advice. He's always a smiling face and ready for a chat ( no matter how busy he is) and picked me up when Im down, and I genuinely feel like he cares about my wellbeing. Thank you Neil
Chloe Nunn always voices my feedback at a higher level. She also has explained reasons behind staff decisions if it was not he outcome I previously wanted. I think there is a change around he NOC and feedback from lecturers to students is being highlighted clearly as a result. Chloe has done a great job in voicing concerns by outreaching to her course peers to make an informed decision about how to present the student views a staff-student liaisons. Other reps in the academic unit may have contributed further to the changes but Chloe is the only rep that has reached out to me personally.

Chris is simply put; the apex that one gets when combining all the best traits that a supervisor can have. An excellent academic, incredible entrepreneur and a superb role model that is hard working with a thirst for achieving only the best in his research endeavours as well as for his students. Never in my previous 6 years at this university have I met a man that is so willing to help and approachable as Chris. His efforts for taking the time to guide students through difficulties can be found on numerous occasions, but one stands out to me the most and that was the time coming up to my first paper submission. It was the days before Christmas and, although he was on holiday, with my paper in one hand, a newborn baby in the other and his phone pressed against his ear by his shoulder, Chris took the time to share his wisdom with me. I do not know how this man does it, but no matter what the world throws at him, he always put others ahead of himself. For these reasons, I wish to nominate Christopher Holmes for the Best Academic Support as better commitment and support could not be had from a supervisor.
During labs if you had an issue he would sit down and spend time helping you out. I would hate programming if it wasnt for him. He also was super approachable and answered emails quickly.
As a Director of Programmes, Nicholas Gibbins has done their best to help the students in our cohort by personally dealing with deadline clashes, and putting himself in our shoes when we feel swamped by work. Could not ask for better academic support.
Steve King has earned nominations in previous years, and it isn’t the least bit surprising that the friendly neighbourhood particle physicist has done it yet again. His broad array of talents makes him easily suitable for each category of award available here.
In his lectures he presents often intricate and complicated course content in a very concentrated manner, focussing on conveying the absolute fundamentals of the material in a way few other lecturers can manage. Through this, students leave lectures with more understanding per contact hour, and lecture attendance has been interestingly high as a result.
Though what sets Steve King beyond ‘just’ an engaging lecturer is his affability: his office door is always open for long discussions about his course, about any physics problem even outside his course, about his research, always with a smile on his face and a firm belief that there are no stupid questions. Sitting as a member of the SSLC, he has helped greatly in conveying the student input to his colleagues, and with great enthusiasm supports the purpose of the committee as a liaison between students and staff. He has actively sought out and had discussions with course reps and an academic president even outside of these meetings. It also helps that his exams set a gold standard for approachability: straightforward questions with an occasional subtle physics joke keeps morale high in the exam hall, and even weaker students will feel comfortable sitting one of his papers.
One can forgive him for being adorably shy in his lectures, for despite this his engagement with students is nothing short of remarkable. He has been and still is an asset to the department, and it is for this myriad of reasons that I feel he deserves an Academic Award.

There doesn't seem to be a category for most committed to student feedback, so I chose Best Academic Support. But these people really need to be nominated, so please read on!
Tony Bird (Physics Director of Programmes) and David Smith (NSS Champion) have gone out of their way the last few years to gather and act on student feedback from ALL students, not just the most engaged/enthusiastic ones. They visit one core lecture every semester and patiently stand at the front and listen to all of our complaints from the very big (timetabling issues, maybe) to the very small (the last problem sheet was too hard) and offer practical solutions to every single one. They've introduced new ways of gathering our feedback early on in the semester so that any issues with a module can be fixed long before they become a problem.
Tony in particular has a fantastic reputation with the academic rep team as well as with Physoc, and his door is always open -- no matter how busy he is (extremely) -- to ANY student who wants to talk to him.
These two guys have played such a massive, massive role in improving the student experience in physics. They care so deeply about their students and have done far more than any single lecturer can ever do, and yet there's not even an appropriate category to nominate them in. :(

Along with having a stellar, yet humble knowledge of photonics that he shares very efficiently, Nic consistently goes above and beyond to help students with understanding and problems, both in and outside of the lab sessions.
I have never received such detailed and useful feedback on a problem sheet as that which Dr Akeroyd provides. He marks every problem sheet himself (at least in Advanced Quantum Physics) so you know you're getting the best, most consistent feedback possible. He also goes out of his way to make himself available to his students if they want to ask him questions -- his office hours are essentially "whenever I'm not teaching"!
Most Engaging Lecturer
Not only does Bill do a fantastic job of maintaining the enthusiasm of a bunch of final year students who really just want to get their degrees and get outta here (which is pretty impressive in and of itself) but he also manages to engage a whole range of physicists who have very little background in photonics, and so could easily be very quickly turned off by the subject material (lasers). Bill goes out of his way to keep us up to date with research in the field and showing us -- through lab tours and similar -- how what we've learned applies in real research.
He's also easily the coolest dude in physics.
Bill teaches two courses of complex laser theory simply because he says he loves teaching. He makes every lecture engaging throwing in little anecdotes and random facts about the particular topic we're studying. He's always animated and makes me want to listen. He takes the time to record and upload all of his lectures for anyone that misses something. He is always more than happy to answer any questions in class and is never too busy to answer problems outside of class. He goes above and beyond what is required and he makes me excited about the subject. He is part of the reason I'm keen to do a PhD in his field. But the main reason he should be nominated is because he deserves it.
He uses brief quizzes to great effect - they make everyone engage actively with the material presented in the lecture rather than just writing it down which means it is much easier to learn the material when going back over lecture notes, and they work well as summaries of previous lectures and as revision aids.
This technique defeats the old quote: “A lecture is a process whereby the notes of the professor become the notes of the student without passing through the minds of either.” Which is a particular problem of physics lectures
She writes the best course notes of any lecturer I've ever had: they are interesting to read, have a variety of asides and additions about related topics or applications and often mention the history of a discovery which makes it much easier to understand where a result comes from. Since she teaches very challenging courses which present a great deal of new material, the engaging nature of her notes is all the more impressive. Her lectures largely follow them but add more mathematical detail and she discusses the broader picture of the subject, which only increases how stimulating her courses are.
Lectures are easy to follow, fun and engaging. I felt he was actually enthusiastic about teaching us and always gave us feedback on time. Everything he taught us I understood.
He is simply the best lecturer I've ever had. Ask anyone who's ever attended his two astronomy classes. He is encrdibly enthusiastic, managing to convey many of the complicated topics eloquently and with so much passion. He is very talented at making even the most complex topics simple to understand. He is compassionate and understanding towards us students and genuinely wants us to enjoy learning. I wish I was better with words, to explain better just what a great lecturer he is and how much I think he deserves some recognition.
He made astrophysics accessible for physicists who hadn't studied astro before (in a 3rd year elective), extremely enthusiastic, made sure to switch between theory and application, kept the subject interesting by showing cutting edge research in the topics being discussed, encouraged students to go and explore published data outside of the course
Mike is always dedicated and enthusiastic to teaching stellar evolution and photons in Astrophysics. He devotes a lot of hard work and time on making interesting lectures and helping with feedback and problem sheets when he is often busy with many other pursuits in and out of the uni. His enthusiasm, constant good nature and willingness to help at any opportunity to me makes him an easy choice for this award. Thank you Mike!
Extremely interesting and engaging. Always puts a lot of effort into his course (PHYS3010).
Mike is probably the only lecture I have ever had who not only knows that there is something interesting in every topic now matter how dull it may seem but understands how to communicate this to students. His enthusiasm is inescapable and he can make anything interesting - I once dropped in on a lecture for a course I had previously taken for a refresher and he even turned going through homework questions (which had nothing to do with me) into an engaging and thought-provoking discussion. From lengthy and involved derivations to basic groundwork there is nothing he can't make interesting, however when he teaches a topic which touches upon his personal interests it is almost impossible not to fall in love with it due to his exuberant and unabashed fascination.
In addition to all of this, the questions he writes are incredibly fair and test understanding more than memorised facts. But more importantly almost every one has substantial physical insight in it and by working through the questions it is possible to gain a better grasp of the relevant physical processes, which in itself is remarkable yet another distinguishing feature is that the questions he poses are often fun and lighthearted so doing a problem sheet is not only academically useful but even approaches enjoyable.
He is always energetic and enthusiastic about the lectures. Always makes it worthwhile to turn up and also explains the problems thoroughly and in an easy to understand way. Great jokes as well
Vasilis is always enthusiastic to explain ideas and concepts in labs that, despite not being strictly on the syllabus, have been very effective in providing a broader understanding of what's going on. His genial explanations and demonstrations are a fantastic reminder that beneath the exams and lectures, photonics is fun and lasers are really cool.
Best Pastoral Support
As the senior tutor in Physics, Prof. Coe has helped so many students through difficult situations. I personally know of many students suffering from mental health issues who have been helped tremendously by Malcolm, not just by his superb practical advice, but also his kind and understanding manner. In my personal experience, he had such an incredible way of making you feel like your problems, however big or small, are real and important, but also solvable. He played a big part in helping me recover from a low by reminding me that not only is there a way out of my troubles, but that that way out is through myself.

These 4 ECS reps have done a superb job addressing issues in first year Electronics and Electrical modules. Running surveys to get student opinions, sorting out issues and meeting with staff. I hope they continue to be reps throughout their degrees.
Not only did he provide a friendly and approachable way to deal with problems within the faculty and lectures, he went above and beyond his remit and completed tasks not within the standard role. In particular, he organised the printing of notes of no less than 3 modules. As part of this he brought them to lectures, to be handed out to all students.
Continued commitment to both ECS and the SSLC despite not being a course rep. Supported people through exams and always has the time to find out information.
Made my complaints heard, when I came to her with issues and problems, she sorted them out quickly and actually made changes
Hope has been a really keen freshers' course rep, getting involved in representation outside the SSLC and very effectively encouraging students across all years to participate in the end of module surveys (with only moderate levels of bribery involved).

Brian has been both an exceptional lecturer, and academic support through the extra work he does for the department. His lecturing technique and commitment to the material and ensuring students fully grasp it is outstanding, particularly in giving mid-module feedback . The work Brian does for the Geography department outside teaching, this year has included securing a partnership with the renowned property firm Grosvenor, which resulted in myself and another student completing an internship with the company as well as stakeholder access for students completing undergraduate research. Additionally, Brian's commitment to creating and managing a group of 'Employability Ambassadors' in the department has helped students across all years to advance their academic and employability skills through a student led system. For these reasons I believe Brian should be formally recognised for his continued support in all aspects of academic life, a statement I'm sure many other students would also support.
Cristian has shown exceptional commitment to supporting part time students with projects. He has enabled remote working through the use of skype for fortnightly meetings and has made himself available way outside of normal office hours and whilst abroad to continue to provide support around an awkward schedule. He was also extremely responsive to emails asking for help with references and code snippets to help explain some of the concepts and details needed for the project. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Cristian and found his enthusiasm for my project helped to keep me going, despite some challenges in the time scale and ultimately get a good project finished on time. My project is already being used by the wider organisation as a step forward in the evidence base we can draw on for supporting policy development.
He is very approachable. Gives a lot of office hours. Makes sure students are guided properly in the module. Very hardworking as a lecturer.

I was suprised to learn that he is doing an intergrated PhD, as his knowledge of maths and economics is really astounding. He makes all of our concepts really simple, especially as there is quite a jump from A level maths to studying it at first year, so his help in understanding these concepts is really appreciated. It also helps that Daniel is able to emphathise with us, as he has just finished his undergraduate here, so he knows exactly what the department expects and pushes us to get the best marks we can. Daniel's help has also been really useful for those of us who have taken a gap year, as he never assumes implicit knowledge- something other lecturers should take not of!'
Matt is always passionate about his specialist subject as well as delivering clear, engaging and challenging lectures.
His approach of combining his teaching of pedagogy with a physics topic in such a way that you leave the lecture realising that although the topic was about electric circuits you also learned about different ways to teach all parts of the subject. This multi layered approach in addition to his excellent lecturing rapport and general professionalism is why I have nominated Matt.

During my 3rd year project in medicine, Hedwig went way and above to support me and allow me to get so involved in the planning and running of the study. She was there over the summer and through weekends, she'd always make time to meet me to stay updated, always answered emails in good time, gave great feedback and pushed me to do more. She's the reason we're working toward a publication and why I did so well with my dissertation. She's a great teacher.
Raimondas is always quick to respond to emails and he takes his time to anticipate any further questions which may arise, which he then proactively answers. With other lecturers, I send them a two-page email and they reply in 1 sentence, while as for Raimondas, I send him one sentence and he replies with a two-page email (slight exaggeration). He is my dissertation supervisor and he has gone far beyond what would be required of him to help me with my project. He has invested countless hours meeting up with me and reviewing my drafts and guiding me through the process while also teaching me interesting things not immediately relevant to the topic at hand.

Relentless and contagious enthusiasm and passion for the subject. Extremely well structured and planned lectures and seminars. Interactive lectures which provide opportunities for student engagement outside of seminars. Can make complex problems and ideas understandable.
Christian's lectures are highly engaging and he introduces contorversial topics in a way that makes you think about them very hard. I have reevaluated some of my beliefs because of the way he has presented them. He never portrays one belief as better than the other, however. Christian is highly enthusistic about the topic and I will certainly be applying for his module on the Ethics of war next year; maybe even his other one on Health security as well. I very much look forward to his lectures each week and I am disappointed that he only is only teaching us for three sessions.
He is dedicated to students, providing excellent feedback and also has an open door.
Has a personal relationship with all of his students, knows them by name and wishes to understand each student on a personal level to provide better feedback and tailor teaching for each individual.
His lectures are engaging as he creates interactive lectures where student participant is encouraged and every point or view matters.
The tutorials he organises are innovative and sole driven by student interaction, for example he regularly does debate styled tutorials were all students will be encouraged to take part and have there say on the debate topic e.g. Torturing terrorists is wrong in his Ethics of War Model. This are organised in a traditional debate house style with a proposition etc.
His style of teaching is so popular his global health module this semester was extended to allow for greater intake. That sums up how outstanding he is as a lecture. He is a true asset to the PAIR department and Social Science Faculty
He also takes student concerns seriously and has implemented audio recording of lectures (a hot topic within the department) for all his lectures
In the few weeks that I've been taught by Christian, he has already become one of my favourite lecturers (top 2 to be precise). His enthusiasm for the subject is second-to-none, and his desire to stimulate debate and for everyone to succeed, contribute and learn is inspiring. He clearly cares so much about the students and that comes across in his teaching. His positivity and passion for the subject that he's teaching is infectious. He is also hugely supportive with work and other matters, and I feel tremendously fortunate to have him as a lecturer in my last semester of university. Thanks Christian!
This lecturer makes every single lecture really interesting and fun! I learn so much from the lectures. Her passion for the subject area really shines through and she really deserves recognition for all the effort she puts in.
I believe Claire should receive this award, as I always enjoy her lectures, as we can all see how enthusiastic she is about the topic, which ensues the enthusiasm and excitement in us about what we're learning. Claire always makes it clear that we can ask any questions and encourages us to all speak up in class and to not be afraid to ask or suggest something, which I find creates a comfortable and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Honestly one of the best lecturers I've had and think I will have, as her lectures are engaging, humourous and full of well-picked psychological content.
Dr Claire Hart is enthusiastic about her subject (PSYC1014) and always strikes the balance between making the content accessible enough for everyone to understand it, yet challenging enough that we still retain an interest in it, therefore increasing the levels of engagement and discussion during lectures. There is no question that she is passionate about her research and always includes recent research in the lectures, therefore unlike previous levels of education, you feel like the topics are still relevant in the modern day.
Dafni is a lecturer who takes great care in her role and her passion for Econometrics is clear for all to see. Although Econometrics can be very abstract and difficult at times, she is able to engage everyone through her excellent delivery of the slides and content. Moreover, she is approachable and friendly, which means students are not afraid to ask questions. For these reasons, I believe Dafni is deserving of the Most Engaging Lecturer award.

He has been by far the most outstanding lecturer I have had the pleasure of listening to as an undergraduate at Southampton university. He is engaging, incredibly skillful and makes the material he teaches fascinating.
Very good subject knowledge, an absolute wizard on Excel. Always happy to help with questions even if they are to do with a dissertation or something outside of the class he is teaching. Good, underrated craic too.
My favourite lectures from both semesters have been taught by Johan and he always makes the topics interesting and clearly enjoys what he does.
John teaches two modules which cover inextricably difficult content within Politics and International Relations. His two modules 'Globalisation' and 'Issues in Third World Politics' are centred upon International Political Economy and yet he really engages his students with the material. International Political Economy is hard to deliver in an interesting manner, especially since some of the content is on things like sub prime mortgages, yet he delivers it really clearly and concisely, making really difficult terms easy to understand and apply to world politics. John's experience as a lecturer and his time at the university has been under-noticed by his faculty, and his ideas and delivery of the courses he has been teaching for so long do not wane in every year that he teaches. He also offers great support within his lectures too. As both of his modules are 100% exam, he allows you to submit draft essays of exam questions, ensuring that you get the best mark possible. Furthermore, he offers great support and additional material in his office hours and will always go above and beyond to make sure that the content is understandable and intellectually stimulating at the same time. Alongside his lectures, he has video sessions which run for some weeks that are interesting and put into context the difficult material. After these video sessions, he will offer question and answer sessions, really making sure that students understand the content, rather than just reciting this for an exam.

Matt is the best lecturer that I've ever had. In our module last semester, Innovations in Governance, he made every lecture interesting, he constructed experiments for us to take part in in seminars, his knowledge of the subject material was so fluent and his expertise came across very clearly, and he made everything really engaging by combining humour and clear examples in his teaching style. He is also a very approachable lecturer, and was always keen for us to ask questions and help with any problems that we had. He always wanted to stimulate debate in the classroom, and was very honest with us and treated us as equals. All in all, Matt was an extremely inspirational teacher and has the ability to make any topic interesting simply by really being able to communicate his knowledge in engaging ways and by being a down to earth and relatable person and creating learning environments that are highly conducive to both an enjoyable and stimulating education. Nathaniel's lecturing style allows complex and sensitive topics to be discussed thoroughly in an engaging and informative way. Particularly in his module GEOG 3064 - Sexuality in the City, he uses case studies and papers to help illustrate examples about complicated and difficult topics such as sex work in an interesting way whilst still providing academic and real world literature to expand on such points. He also uses his own experiences from his history to help to explain topics many students may find hard to identify with. His personality and lecturing style allows for a fun and interactive lecture where students who may never have experienced issues described in the module content can identify and interact with material in a fresh way.
Very engaging and fun approach to learning. Always willing to answer extra questions outside of class and able to make even the most tedious lectures interactive and fun.
He explains the material very relevantly. His notes are very detailed and it can be followed through. At the beginning of every lecture, he goes through the stuff which people have found confusing. This way it's a quick revision at the beginning of every lecture.

This Year, Lizzy has been incredible in the role of Academic President for Social Sciences, she has always made sure she has taken the time to speak to course reps and any student in the academic unit, and make them feel their views are welcome. Furthermore she has led the way lobbying the university on a range of issues, from audio recordings of lectures to all essays being online submission with lots of success. Finally she has been instrumental in opening up the SSLCs allowing all students to attend if they want to not just course reps, making sure everyone's voice is heard.
Throughout my time at University, I've never seen a more passionate, efficient or effective Academic President then Lizzy has been. There's not enough space here to go over all the changes she has achieved in the last year, but her work increasing the transparency through opening up the SSLCS and increasing the accountability of reps is definitely a highlight of the last year. More impressive than any one achievement is the sense of cooperation that she has instilled throughout Social Sciences, between herself and AVPs and course reps as well as she has always been willing to help societies organise relevant events, a great example of this is her helping advertise the debating societies event with Linda Yueh on "China the rise of an economic superpower" . In summary there is no one I can think of who exemplifies what you want in an academic rep as much as Lizzy does, and she would be a deserved winner!
All the SocSci reps this year have been incredible but Lizzy Thomas deserves to be singled out for individual praise. Her work ethic as academic president has been incredible leading the push for audio recordings of lectures, ensuring lectures are held in appropriate venues and numerous other issues. More than that though is her willingness to help individual students with any issues they are having on their course, she is always willing to help. I think for these reasons Lizzy deserves to be recognised at these academic awards.
He has been a true support for all of the work I have done this year. Has been an excellent voice for not only 2nd years but all who study any form of Politics, Economics and IR. He has been compassionate in dealing with personal student concerns and also has the students in mind when lobbying and working with the staff during SSLC's, student forums and RAP working groups. He is one of the best course reps I think PAIR and economics have ever had/ever will have and is a true asset to the union and student representation at the university.
Matthew Cowley has listened to my concerns with specific modules and the course on a regular basis. He has followed up any concerns I have had and paid particular attention in sorting out a large disparity of marks in coursework for one of our modules.
Not only has he done all of this, but he's made an increased effort to help those who are in joint honours.
He is always willing to listen to our concerns and keeps us updated with outcomes of meetings as well as asking for our advice (for example what would be useful for US in the library)
