Heard of lifesaving sport before? I didn't think so! Come and join in what is one of the most exciting and fun societies in the university.
Catering for all abilities, you can learn new skills or improve what you may already know. You can join us at inter university competitions too.
Lifesaving consists of two sides; one where your first aid, teamwork and emergency skills are tested, and one where you swim competitively in rescue style races. For a good idea of what goes on, see http://www.bulsca.co.uk/about-bulsca/lifesaving-sport/ for more.
Our club attended numerous competitions in 2016/17 and with 8+ competition dates set for this year, including the our very own competition and the national championships, we need members like you to further our successes. Last year we came 2nd in the Wessex branch competition... help us to make that 1st this year.
No experience is necessary! Just come along on a Tuesday at 8pm, Jubilee Pool and a Thursday at 18:30 in the SUSU entrance, and we will meet you there!
On TUESDAYS we have a two hour swimming session, 8pm-10pm, where we focus on our general fitness as well as our skills in the speeds/race swimming side of lifesaving. Our events include swimming with manikins, and beneath obstacles. See some of the events here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWse-J6OeoI
On THURSDAYS we meet in the clubs and socs room, and teach you essential lifesaving skills such as bandaging and CPR, as well as training for our scenario competitions. Scenarios are where you have two minutes to treat people whilst in teams of four. The final hour (8-9pm) is pool based scenario training, often with some speeds training thrown in for good measure!
If you are intrigued and want to know more, drop as an email/Facebook message or come along to one of our sessions.
These are the current membership plans offered by Lifesaving , although many groups offer a free period for new members to try out their group.
- Year membership (£45)
This membership covers all entry to university competitions throughout the year. It also allows you to attend (with sport and wellbeing membership) all of our dry and wet training sessions & covers some costs for external coaches.
